ECU: Using big data for cyber security

Edith Cowan University is our host for our first meeting of 2016, to be held on 21st March. Professor Craig Valli will talk about cyber security from the other side: using data analytics to look for patterns of illegal cyber activity. We will also have another speaker from ECU, to be confirmed shortly.

Craig-Valli-for-webProfessor Craig Valli, Director of the Security Research Institute at ECU,  is an expert in cyber security, an area that has rapidly developed in both importance and relevance as we become increasingly dependent on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to run our economies and many facets of everyday life.

Craig has a long background in ICT, including a period as part-owner and director of one of Perth’s first Internet Service Providers. For the past 15 years Craig has been at ECU  and in 2007 became Head of the School of Computer and Information Science. In 2012 it became the Security Research Institute, leading the Australian Computer Society to recognize ECU as a Centre of Expertise in Security. Craig is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society.

The ECU Security Research Institute has a reputation as one of the leading digital security and forensic groups in world, with a range of study areas including computer and digital forensics, network and wireless security, information warfare, physical security, risk management and aviation security. The Unit often works with industry and government, focusing on securing networks and critical infrastructures, detection of network borne threats, forensic analysis of cyber security incidents, network security and digital forensics.
