Big Data for Biodiversity: April 11

The WA Mega Data Cluster and the WA Data Science and Innovation Hub (WADSIH) is holding a biodiversity-themed on Thursday 11th April, 5:15 for 5:30 until 7:00.

Biodiversity is a data-intensive science. It might not have the massive volumes of data that can be found in some other sciences such as radio astronomy, or in the massive data collected from social media or retail. It does, however, have an increasingly diverse range of data inputs and types. With rapid development of new sensor technologies and data collection tools, there are emerging opportunities to integrate and analyse the data to give us new insights into the health of our environment. Our speakers will share their experiences of applying data science to biodiversity data, and outline some of the opportunities and challenges ahead.

WA’s Chief Scientist, Professor Peter Klinken will introduce the evening, and Dr Liz Dallimore, Director WADSIH will give a brief overview of the recently established WA Data Science and Innovation Hub.  Our presenters for the evening will be:

Greg Terrill, Chief Data Officer, Department of Environment and Energy

Prior to his current role, Greg has held a number of senior roles in environmental investment and protection areas of the Department, and in relation to climate change. He has also worked on these issues in several countries overseas.

Matt Judkins, Partner, Deloitte Access Economics

Matt is a partner of Deloitte and leads the Deloitte Access Economics team in Western Australia.

Through his diverse background in strategy, public policy and business advisory to his clients across the public and private sectors, Matt will bring a different perspective on big data and biodiversity. He has worked extensively across Asia, Europe and Africa before returning to Western Australia 8 years ago. He is passionate about seeing WA play its role on the world stage.

After the evening’s presentations, join us for refreshments and the opportunity to network.
